College Football and Crime

A six-month investigation by Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports found that 7 percent of the players on the roster of SI’s 2010 preseason Top 25 – 1 of every 14 -- had criminal records. The exhaustive investigation, which involved conducting criminal background checks on 2,837 players, found that 204 had been charged with or cited for a crime, including dozens of players with multiple arrests. Sixty percent of the players with a criminal history were black and 38 percent were white. One of the study’s co-authors – Richard Benedict – will be at the Losing to Win Conference to discuss the findings.
