Each year the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport issues a report card on graduation rates for college athletes. This year, the report showed a widening gap between black and white players in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. "To say that it's troubling is an understatement," said Richard Lapchick, the study’s author and a speaker at the Losing to Win Conference.
"It is a staggering gap, but I think you've seen an increased percentage among African American athletes over the years because of the (Academic Progress Rate) thresholds. Losing scholarships is a big lever there. ... Now you have to raise the expectation level of the rates."
